Bragi Bergthórsson is born in Reykjavík, Iceland. Coming from a family with great musical background he began to take violin tuition at 5, later moving on to piano. His first appearance on stage was with the Childrens choir of the Icelandic Opera in Othello (Verdi). He did his undergraduate studies at the Reykjavík College of Music and later at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, finishing his M.mus degree as well as Opera studies under the guidance of Professors Adrian Thompson and Rudolf Piernay. He has also sat and taken part in masterclasses given by Sir Thomas Allen, Elly Ameling, Dalton Baldwin, Jorma Hynninen, Helmut Deutsch and Kristján Jóhannsson.
His operatic experience includes performances at the GSMD and the Icelandic Opera, singing roles such as Flamand in Capriccio (Strauss), Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss), Don Curzio and Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Gastone in La Traviata (Verdi) as well as covering for Alfredo, Tinca in Il Tabarro (Puccini). He also sang the lead role in a chamberopera by Icelandic composer Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Grettir, performed in Reykjavík, Bayreuth and Toronto. He has appeared in recitals in many countries and has performed some of the great Lieder-cycles such as Dichterliebe (Schumann) and Schwanengesang (Schubert). Furthermore Bragi has sung in Requiem (Mozart), Symphony no. 4 (Schnittke), Passio (Pärt) and various Oratoric productions.
